Hard Work Always Works.

A few of us Evolve firefighters had the opportunity to instruct the firefighter rescue module of our Northern Colorado fire academy over the last several days. One of the the things we find ourselves repeating during this class is “hard work always works.” This saying came from our friend Brian Brush (for you firefighters out there if you don’t know of Brian, you should immediately go to his website Fire By Trade and get your learning on). The reason we say “hard work always works” is because it’s not uncommon for not only new recruits but experienced firefighters to try to come up with some innovative and creative trick to make the extremely difficult task of removing an unconscious firefighter in full gear from a building easier. Almost always these great ideas go spectacularly wrong and end up wasting precious time and leading to confusion and a poor evolution. We know that “hard work always works” and we try to instill this on these new firefighters. There’s no getting around it, you need to dig in, apply the skills that you’ve been taught, and just do the work. It’s the only thing that will get it done.

Why am I writing about this on a CrossFit blog? Because “hard work always works” applies to pretty much anything and everything. In a time when it seems so many are looking for a “hack” to make things easier, the reality is that there isn’t a hack or a magic pill. Another quote that I heard this week that is appropriate to mention here: “everyone is looking for the cape and magic wand. But there isn’t a cape and magic wand because magic isn’t real.” Beautiful! But you know what is real? Hard work. In the context of the CrossFit world, this applies to your training, your nutrition, your recovery, and just about every other aspect of your fitness journey. When evaluating your goals and how you’re going to reach them, there is no easy way. But don’t worry, hard work always works, and I know you guys know how to work. So let’s get to it!
