Having a plan for running WODs in the winter goes a long way!
400s in the Winter!
You’re a CrossFitter. You train to be good at anything and everything. You’re ready for whatever comes your way. Even if it’s a WOD with 400s in January! We make a conscious decision to not completely bag running during the winter season. Sure, we have to be a little more thoughtful with those running WODs, but the reality is why wouldn’t we run in the winter? Because it’s cold out? That doesn’t really make a lot of sense. We want to be well rounded in our athletic abilities, and for many of us, winter brings a whole bunch of outdoor pursuits that require us to get after it in the cold. So a little running in the winter is just part of the program.
Each week when we review the WODs, we look at the projected weather forecast and if having a run as part of the WOD has the potential to put you guys at risk, we make a change. We want you all to be badasses for sure, but making you run sprints in an ice storm isn’t very smart. So we change the WOD. But if the weather looks clear, like it is tomorrow, then that run is a go!
A little planning can go a long way. Wearing layers that you can shed, gloves if your hands tend to get cold, a winter hat, maybe some lighter colors if you come to a WOD that happens after (or before) the sun is out, and even a headlamp or handlight, are all things you can do to make that run a little more tolerable. Of course you can also rock the tee shirt, do a little Wim-Hof breathing, and rely on your brown fat to get you through! Either way, know that your running capacity is not going to go down just because it’s winter!
