A Cautionary Tale

A story was relayed earlier this week that needs repeating. Why? Because it could save your life. OK, probably not save your life, but maybe save your WOD. A guy from the gym who we’ll keep anonymous (his name rhymes with Gino) told the story of how before Tuesday’s WOD we looked at the board to see what the times of the day were so he knew what to shoot for. He saw a time of 11 minutes and change. Now if you did that workout, you’d know that a time that fast would be pretty much impossible. Regardless, that was the time he was going to shoot for. As he finished the wall balls, Gino looked at the clock and it was at 10 minutes. He sadly realized he wasn’t going to make his goal of 11 minutes and as he tells it “I got pissed and unmotivated and all I could think about was how someone got 11 minutes!” He finished the workout in 14 minutes and change, which by the way was one of the fastest times of the day. He then went to check out the board to see who the superhero was that smoked him by 11 minutes only to realize he misread the time. Nobody got 11 minutes. Or 12, or 13 either. Hilare!

So many lessons here. One is that if you’re going to try to smoke the times of the folks who have already done the workout you might want to make sure that the time is correct! On the other hand, setting that goal of 11 minutes probably made Gino go way faster than he would have otherwise, though the sadness of not even coming close might have slowed him down a touch. It’s tough to tell. Either way, keep your head straight when you’re in the thick of things because you never know. The end.
