This gym is full of great people. People who are passionate about doing good things. Good things for their family, for their friends, and for strangers. As a child, I never went to bed the night before Christmas wondering if there would be presents to open the next morning. For one thing, there were ALREADY presents under the tree. These were the ones from my mom and dad and judging by the boxes they were the boring ones, like clothes. The really good stuff would come during the night from Santa!
There are nearly 15 million children in the United States alone living at or below poverty level. Children that, most likely, will have not have presents to open on Christmas morning. Toys for Tots was founded in 1947 by Major Bill Hendricks, USMCR. Inspired by his wife, who was unable to find an organization to donate a homemade Raggedy Ann doll to a needy child, Major Hendricks gathered a group of Marine reservists and collected over 5,000 toys for children in need.
TWU Local 556, the Union of Southwest Airlines Flight Attendants, has participated in the Toys for Tots donation drive since 2002. As I was setting up my donation box in the Southwest Airlines Flight Attendant Lounge at DIA, I thought maybe this is something the amazing people at Evolve would like to be a part of. I emailed Jon and, of course, he said absolutely! By spending what many of us spend at Starbucks in a week’s time you can make a child’s Holiday season a little brighter.
The Toys for Tots donation box will be set up at Evolve from December 11 – 18. All toys will be delivered to Toys for Tots on December 19. I thank you all in advance for your generosity! I would also like to thank Jon and all of the amazing coaches at Evolve for creating a place with such a sense of community where the Toys for Tots drive is so welcomed. Happy Holidays to everyone!
