in DNF: The True Tale of Failure at a Spartan Race, the author talks about something that kept him from finishing the race. It wasn’t the mud. It wasn’t the elevation. It wasn’t the distance covered. It wasn’t an obstacle. It was what you have to do when you can’t complete an obstacle. It was the burpee. When you fail to complete, or decide to go around, obstacles in the Spartan Race, you’re required to do 30 burpees. The tag line of the story is:

A writer discovers the most underrated, painful, and demeaning obstacle in the world—the burpee.

I chuckled out loud when I read it. You guys all know how bad burpees suck, but ripping out 30 at a pop is just another day in the gym for you. So when you groan the next time a bunch of burpees are programmed, keep in mind that not only are you getting fitter, you’re ready for the Spartan Races if you dare to sign up!!
