We get a lot of questions regarding artificial sweeteners as part of good nutrition. Most people believe that since it's not sweetened with sugar, there aren't any issues. Of course it's important to understand that the "artificial" in artificial sweeteners may be an indication that what's being consumed doesn't fall into the category of real food. That should be a red flag.

Here's another one: artificial sweeteners, though calorie free, can cause people to put on weight. We've discussed this in our nutrition talks before. Part of the insulin response process starts when we taste something sweet. This sets the wheels in motion, and eventually that sugar hits our bloodstream (we won't get into the whole process today). With artificial sweeteners, the body tastes sweet and wants to set the wheels in motion. Only thing is, no sugar makes it into the blood. Think your body is confused at this point? Well, it is.

Check out the article posted on Medical News Today titled Artificial Sweeteners Affect Metabolism and Insulin Levels for some insight gained from a study  done by the Washington University School of Medicine reported in the journal Diabetes Care.
