For this round of programming, Garcia asked all the coaches to come up with a workout that represented them well. Today is Tybo's!
Kendra and Juli on the "podium"!
Here's a post from Gino:
What do you do after the WOD?
What do you do after your workout? Do you lay on the ground? Go get a drink? Do you start to stretch? Do you start putting your equipment away? Do you go outside to expel your last food intake? Or do you get in the face of your fellow athletes and help them get through that WOD and and the challenges that they might be facing?
I was reading an old post from from our friend and prior athlete Juli Bauer where she was talking about this very same subject. What was interesting was she used Evolve as the example. She stated that she was so impressed and inspired from watching and being a part of a culture of people who when they finished their workout they went right to the others that were still working to cheer them on. It always makes us proud to hear things like this. Values like this are what make a house a home or in our case a gym a family!
We have never had to verbalize this "behavior" it was just always there. It was the way that Jon, Tyson and I worked out for years when working out together. It is part of that bonding experience with CrossFit that I think is so unique to what we do.
Are you an athlete that typically finishes before everyone else or somewhere in the middle of the pack? Or, are you an athlete that might finish last? If you typically finish first, have you ever been the last one to finish a WOD? If so, were there other athletes picking up their equipment or stretching by themselves in the corner? How did that make you feel? Or, did you push through a WOD more so than you would have because a fellow athlete stood by your side and told you "you can do it", or "we're going to get through this together". How did "that" make you feel?
If you have never finished last, think about this. How would you feel out there all by yourself, on that island of pain with no end in site. We have always been great about supporting each other but I have seen more and more picking up weights, stretching, etc. is starting to come before supporting each other. That support is the best thing about CrossFit. It is hard! I hear from so many people that "I would not be able to do this on my own". I hear ya. I have quit on many WOD's when I have had to workout by myself. At Regionals this year on the second WOD of the second day my back was cramping and I felt like walking away. Just standing was a difficult task. If it wasn't for Keane and my old buddy Brandon Mericle from CrossFit Surge who had finished before me standing by my side, I would have.
The WOD is not over when you're done. It is over when everyone is done. That is how teams operate and that is how families survive. We will always have time to pick up. We leave no man or woman behind. Be there for one another and bond through those times of struggle and success. You never know if that one word of support you give to that person may make all the difference in the world. Heck, you never know – you might need it someday no matter how good you think you are.
Great message Gino!! I always try to cheer everyone on, if I happen to finish before others. I worry a bit about getting things cleaned up, but from now on, I’m leaving my sh*t all over the place!! 🙂
Tyson would like to add to the directions for his WOD: “If you don’t sweat in your crack, you’re not doing it right.” I also vote for that to be our new slogan on the back of the next Evolve t-shirt.
I am with you on this Gino. I have been guilty myself for not cheering for my brother. I feel that cheering for each other helps us grow both individualy and as a team. Thanks for noticing areas we can improve. David T.
As one of the people who almost ALWAYS finishes last, I know that I really appriciate all of you cheering me on and encouraging me to finish strong! You all have been great! I am so proud to be part of the Evolve team! Big thanks to everyone!
I’m with Staci! I can’t thank everyone enough for cheering me on even when they have places to be and things to do. The motivation that I get from fellow Evolvers is what gets me back the next day. The support system that exists is inspiring, and like Jon said…it doesn’t need to be a verbalized behavior. It is ingrained in this family. I’ve been there and know how it is, and I will always cheer on those still working after I’m done! (even if it is while gasping for air on the floor)
I made sure I was last today so I wouldn’t have to clean up my mess! Well, that back fired since everyone hung around and cheered me on instead of cleaning up. Thanks everyone!!
This sums up what I think is the true backbone of the Crossfit culture. I still remember my first visit to a CF gym, the most striking feature was the culture of being able to cheer on anyone without reservation.
