Josh with a big lift last week. The gravity of the load pulled the camera a little out of focus!
Last week we had a fun skill session with the max box jumps! This is always a fun day to coach because we get to see many of you overcome that fear of jumping on something that your brain says you shouldn't be jumping on. We talk a lot about the mental game that max box jump plays. When the height of the box steadily climbs, it gets to a point where all rational thought screams at you "this is way too high to jump on!" And then at that point, you have to make a choice. You've got to step up to that box and give it everything you have, or you bail. If you don't commit 100%, if even a hint of doubt sneaks in there, you don't make the jump. It's really that simple. The great thing is that with a few choice words from your coach and the support of your friends, you all went for it. Not everybody got the height they were shooting for, but you all went for it. Awesome!
There's another side to the max box jump though. It's a practical application of the explosive power you guys have been working on. The only weight involved is your body weight, and you're seeing how high you can move it. When we look at the 10 general physical skills, the max box jump hits on strength, flexibility, power, coordination, agility, balance, accuracy, and for some overcoming the fear of standing on something tall. So as fun as it is, and as taxing mentally as it is, it is also valid!
So with that, check out the video below that Brandi reminded me of after max box jump day. It's UFC fighter BJ Penn, who many of you know of. Now that you're all comfortable with jumping nice and high, give this a try this summer when you're relaxing by the pool!
