How's your nutrition going? Still dialed 10 days into the new year? I know you are! One of the things you might have realized is how much you're looking at labels. Everyone wants to know if this or that is "legit." With that, we start reading labels to see what's in there. It's pretty amazing when you reach for something and see a whole paragraph of ingredients, many of which you can't pronounce.
We were talking about this very subject at work during dinner the other day, and MSG came up. MSG - monosodium glutamate, is essentially the salt of the amino acid glutamic acid. It's put in all sorts of foods to make them more palatable. A google search will reveal all sorts of pro- and anti- MSG websites. Regardless of your take of adding salt to processed foods and it's impact on your health, you may want to know if MSG is in your food. Funny thing though, reading the label might not easily let you know. As is the case with many ingredients in our food, especially those with long chemistry-experiment-sounding names, you might not know what you're eating. Check out all the other alternative names for MSG found on ingredient labels:
Glutamic acid (E 620)
Glutamate (E 620)
Monosodium glutamate (E 621)
Monopotassium glutamate (E 622)
Calcium glutamate (E 623)
Monoammonium glutamate (E 624)
Magnesium glutamate (E 625)
Natrium glutamate
Yeast extract
Anything “hydrolyzed”
Any “hydrolyzed protein”
Calcium caseinate, Sodium caseinate
Yeast food, Yeast nutrient
Autolyzed yeast
Gelatin
Textured protein
Soy protein, soy protein concentrate
Soy protein isolate
Whey protein, whey protein concentrate
Whey protein isolate
Anything “…protein”
Vetsin
Ajinomoto
Now memorize those for your next shopping trip. Right. So, a little research on your part goes a long way. The point is that the regulations allow the use of these in place of MSG, which most folks have heard of and try to avoid. As part of your nutrition journey, take a careful look at all the ingredients your're eating and become an informed eater!
